On a small island south of the Aswan Dam lies this beautiful temple complex of Philae. It was nearly lost to the rising waters of the dam, but was lifted piece by piece to a higher location, thus preserving the art work and carvings. The work was started by Ptolemy II but actually was completed during the Roman occupation. Both the Greeks and the Romans continued to acknowledge the ancient Egyptian deities, mostly for political and social reasons.
