Some of these obelisks were plundered by European archaeologists, but several still remain in Karnak. Several theories exist on how they were erected, but the best has the obelisk placed on a huge mound of sand, and then sand was excavated on the bottom end so the block slide into place. Ropes and manpower did the rest to lift into a complete upright position.
